Working with the Silvanus Trust Jez Ralph was involved in funding for the initial prototyping and testing of thermally modified English ash. The work was led by Grown in Britain, Vastern Timber, Tyler Hardwoods with testing undertaken by BRE. Thermal modification alters the cellulose structure of the timber to create a very highly durable product using only heat. Thermal modification has become an important technology in Europe and the timber used in external cladding. As a potential use of low-durability ash that is being hit hard by Chalara (ash dieback) this is an important innovation for the UK.
UPDATE: Thermally modified ash and other species is now available under the Brimstone brand.
