Exmoor National Park Authority owns or is responsible fore a considerable amount of woodland, much of it ancient oak. We will be working with the National Park to survey these woodlands and produce a timber strategy. Keeping within the main environmental and landscape priorities of the woodland management we will be exploring how better value can be created from programmed thinning operations.
We will be using QGIS to map the woodlands and add volume and quality assessment after which we will be undertaking a supply-chain survey to see how extracted timber can be moved into better value products. Even in the earliest phase of the work we have found stacks of harvested timber designated as firewood containing a large proportion of sawlog material and potential crucks for timber framing.
